Founded in 1994, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History promotes the study and love of American history. The Institute creates history-centered schools and academic research centers; organizes seminars and enrichment programs for educators; produces print and electronic publications and traveling exhibitions; and sponsors lectures by eminent historians. The Institute maintains this website to serve as a portal for American history on the Web; to offer high-quality educational material. |

This site ties all content area curricula based on national standards of respective organizations. Lesson plans, activities and other curricula are set to K-12 levels so all teachers can obtain materials for appropriate grade levels.

| 5.) Organizations of American Historians |
The Organization of American Historians is the largest learned society devoted to the study of American history. Since its founding in 1907 as the Mississippi Valley Historical Association, the OAH has promoted the study and teaching of the American past through its many activities. The work of the organization is supported primarily through the contributions of its membership. This site includes links to publications and research, available resources, information on prizes and fellowships, and activities for history teachers. |

The National Council for History Education is a non-profit corporation whose Board of Trustees is dedicated to promoting the importance of history in schools and in society. NCHE links history in the schools with many activities sponsored by state and local organizations. We provide a communications network for all advocates of history education, whether in schools, colleges, museums, historical councils, or community groups. This website contains links to numerous state and local history organizations.</ |

The Gilder Lehrman Institute regularly features documents from the Gilder Lehrman Collection so that scholars and teachers may have access to them. Featured Documents are published every two weeks on this website. Anyone who wants to know instantly when a new document is published can sign up to be notified via email.</ |

The Newberry Library, located in Chicago, has one of the best collections of Early Republic documents in the nation. The library also includes: collections on American Indian history; the western movement and frontier; fur trading; numerous manuscripts involving the Civil War, Native Americans and the West, journalism, social action, politics and theater; and a well-regarded collection of maps. |

Designed for high school and college teachers and students, History Matters serves as a gateway to web resources and offers other useful materials for teaching U.S. history. Among the many digital resources are lesson plans, syllabi, links and exhibits, student-completed work, forums where teachers share strategies, and teaching assignments using web resources. |

The site is from the National Endowment for the Humanities, in partnership with the National Trust for the Humanities, and the Verizon Foundation. This site brings online humanities resources -- including literature and language arts, and art and culture -- from some of the world's great museums, libraries, cultural institutions, and universities. |
