CESA 6 facilitates the Regional Spelling Bee for the school districts within its region. The location for the three Regional Spelling Bees is shared among the districts on a rotating basis. Regional Champions participate in the state competition.
The Badger State Spelling Bee was initiated in 1949 and is currently sponsored by the Wisconsin State Journal. Contestants range from grades five through grade eight and must not have reached sixteen years of age before the date of the National Spelling Bee for that school year. Students compete at the school level and in regional bees. One champion from each regional bee moves on to the State Spelling Bee. The champion of the State Bee then advances to the National Spelling Bee. The National Spelling Bee is sponsored by the E.W. Scripps Company. The National Spelling Bee has been in existence since 1925.
To participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program, your school-or a benefactor on behalf of your school-must enroll on-line. There is a materials and enrollment fee of $99 per public, private, parochial, charter, and virtual/on-line school. The materials and enrollment fee for home school associations is also $99 per association. For individual home school families who are not members of Bee-enrolled home school associations, there is a $10 per family materials and enrollment fee.
After registration with Scripps closes the enrollment information is sent to the Wisconsin State Spelling Bee Coordinator in Madison. It is then forwarded on to the CESAs. The CESA 6 Regional Spelling Bee communicates with the participating districts in CESA 6 to organize the Regional Bee.
The deadline to register with Scripps at www.spellingbee.com is mid October each year (date determined by Scripps).A late enrollment period from the middle of October through the middle of December is allowed by Scripps for an additional fee. The Badger State Bee is held in Mid to late March each year in the Madison area.
