The Mission Statement:

The purpose of the Alternative Program for Middle and High School Special Education Students is to provide alternative educational environments for students who have been unable to successfully function in a program for Special Education students in the regular school environment. These alternative settings are an extension of the Special Education programs located in the Middle and High schools in the CESA 6 area. Students are registered at their home school and enrolled in the alternative program as their class of attendance.

A percentage of special education students present disruptive and inappropriate behavior that cannot be dealt with effectively within the regular school environment. An alternative educational environment with varied settings and activities can do much to change a student's behavior.

First, an alternative setting provides positive discipline programs with curricular alternatives designed to meet the individual needs, abilities, and interests of these students. Second, a non-traditional setting provides these students with the incentives and the individual opportunities needed to succeed. In the same context, an alternative program is often better equipped to offer these students a more relevant form of affective development in conjunction with vocational preparation. Third, this non-traditional setting often serves to provide greater opportunities for parental involvement.
