Literacy Link: A Multi-Sensory Approach to Sound
March 6 & 7, 2012
Presenter: Peggy Northrup

This course will present a kinesthetic, hands-on approach for bridging the gap between phonological awareness, reading and written language. Attendees will learn specific hand symbols for consonants and vowels that will assist in teaching rhyme, alphabetic code, sound-symbol relationships, phoneme segmentation and blending.

This workshop will provide a hands-on lab experience in using the software, Boardmaker, to create communication displays, labels, games, classroom materials and schedules. Boardmaker is a graphic database containing over 3000 Picture Communication Symbols in clip art form.
 

Writing Supports for Students with Learning Disabilities in Middle/High School

This session will look at the two aspects of writing, the motor component and the composing component. Students who would like to learn more about AT writing tools that they may benefit from are encouraged to attend and also have a special fee schedule. See brochure for more details.

CCSS: How Classroom Teachers Can Begin to Make Changes in Content: Using Doug Fisher's Secondary Model
November 29 and December 15, 2011

Through videotaped lessons and simulations, participants will collaboratively develop a working understanding of how Doug Fisher’s instructional model is used to successfully deliver Common Core in secondary schools.
 

Non-Violent Crisis Intervention - REFRESHER COURSE

Program participants leave with skills that allow them to: Identify the potential for violent or disruptive behaviors. Reduce tensions. Prevent violent episodes. ACCESS for ELLS Test Administrators Certification Workshop

They know that such intervention improves the physical safety of all participants and creates a more trusting and caring learning environment. Anyone who may have to manage the verbally or physically aggressive individuals will benefit from the skills and techniques learned in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.

Maximize Your Touch Using Ipads/Ipods - Special Education Emphasis

This workshop will investigate the use of mobile computing devices within the special education classroom. Apple's iPod Touch and iPad are opening new opportunities for access to personal apps (applications) for communication, access to news, e-texts, and support of the curriculum!
 

Differentiating Reading Instruction

Writing for Emergent Readers
February 9, 2012
Presenter: Karen Stindt

This workshop will explore and provide hands on time with several easy to use computer programs that are for teacher and student use to facilitate engaging curriculum based literacy and writing activities. These programs allow the teacher to make modified activities for their students to use both on and off the computer. For students that cannot read and write independently, the use of picture based activities allows them to both read and write. Using these approaches help bridge the gap into regular education and facilitates inclusion actives by allowing the student to more easily participate in the regular curriculum.

This workshop will provide a hands-on lab experience to create communication displays, labels, games, classroom materials and schedules. Boardmaker is a graphic database containing over 3000 Picture Communication Symbols in clip art form. Each symbol is paired with the written word and foreign languages are also available. The program allows you to make professional looking communication displays or schedules in minutes. The workshop will also highlight intervention techniques to incorporate the communication symbols into literacy, play and social skill activities.
