Student Achievement in High Poverty Schools

knowledge and ideas connected to increasing student achievement. These Title I
schools located in Fond du Lac, Appleton, and Oshkosh are identified as
Spotlight Schools. Spotlight schools were selected based on the school's
documented success in two spotlighted areas including Teaching and Learning and
one of the following, Vision, Leadership and Governance, Decision Making and

Writing for Emergent Readers

This workshop will explore and provide hands on time with several easy
to use computer programs that are for teacher and student use to facilitate
engaging curriculum based literacy and writing activities. These programs allow
the teacher to make modified activities for their students to use both on and
off the computer. For students that cannot read and write independently, the
use of picture based activities allows them to both read and write. Using these
approaches help bridge the gap into regular education and facilitates inclusion
actives by allowing the student to more easily participate in the regular
curriculum.

Literacy Link: A Multi-Sensory Approach to Sound
March 6-7, 2012
Presenter: Peggy Northrup
This course will present a kinesthetic, hands-on approach for bridging
the gap between phonological awareness, reading and written language. Attendees
will learn specific hand symbols for consonants and vowels that will assist in
teaching rhyme, alphabetic code, sound-symbol relationships, phoneme
segmentation and blending. Attendees will also gain an understanding of the
phonological awareness continuum and which activities should be taught when.
Attendees will learn many songs and over 50 phonological awareness activities
that can be implemented immediately into the classroom with any language arts
curriculum. Phonological Awareness Assessment will also be covered. The
children will love this method of teaching literacy.
Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards Training
March 10 & March 24, 2012
Presenter: Bridget Cullen
The Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards specify developmental
expectations for children upon kindergarten completion. This workshop
introduces the Standards and uses the teaching cycle of assessment, planning,
and implementation to support early care and education teachers in a variety of
settings in implementing developmentally appropriate practices. The workshop
provides an overview of the developmental domains through case study, video
based observation, and reflection. Participants increase their awareness of the
state and national context of early learning standards and their application
and relationship to community school, child care, and Head Start programs
